Shopwyke Lakes – Creation of sports pitches in a new residential development

The Project

Working with Hanbury Properties, the developer of a new 90 acre residential housing and care home development at Shopwyke Lakes in Chichester, we were asked to support White Horse Contractors, who were creating new sports facilities on site, with subsoil and topsoil. White Horse Contractors are a specialist in improving pitch infrastructure at landmark stadiums including Twickenham, Charlton Athletic and Queen’s Park Rangers.

The Brief

The key goal was to ensure the supply of materials at a rapid rate, to allow the grounds team to begin working on the construction of the pitches as soon as the site plan allowed, with the aim that facilities would be ready for the 2025 season.

The Timeline

The order was placed in October 2023, and quantities and materials were made ready at this point. Very wet conditions over winter and early spring impacted the outer layer of stock, with the Woodhorn Group site team working round the clock to rescreen the material to the 10mmspec once the final delivery schedule was agreed. Supply began at the end of May 2024 and concluded eight weeks later in July 2024.

The Outcome

Three sports zones have been created, including a cricket pitch and two football pitches.
